Honors Program
Invitation to Excellence
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Cameron University offers an honors program for students who have demonstrated excellence in mathematics. Students who apply and are accepted to enter the honors program benefit from the experience, because of a specially selected curriculum. Honors courses are innovative and reflect the department’s interest in and commitment to student’s academic, intellectual, cultural, and social development.
Qualifications for Joining the Program
- Mathematics majors with a 3.3 GPA in mathematics courses and a 3.6 Cumulative GPA (which is required to graduate Cum Laude) may ask to be considered to enter the Honors in Mathematics or College of Science Honors program.
- Students may apply to the honors program once they complete the calculus sequences.
- Students who qualify are informed to register at the new student’s conference and can pick up an application from the administrative assistance of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
Requirement to Remain in Good Standing in the Program
- Maintain at least 3.3 GPA in Mathematics and at least 3.6 Cumulative GPA
- Students with under 3.3 GPA in Mathematics but high enough Cumulative GPA to be over 3.4 at the end of semester are placed on probation at the end of the semester for one semester and are removed from the program if they are under 3.3 GPA in Mathematics for a second consecutive semester.
- Student can be reinstated after qualifying and registering again.
Graduation Requirements
- Students must take at least four honored courses 3000-level and above.
- Students must work on a research project under the guidance of faculty mentor.
- Student must meet the following GPA requirements:
- A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.6
- A mathematics grade point average of at least 3.3 (which no grade lower than B in the honor courses); and no grade of “F” in any course.
