WELCOME

Congratulations on your employment at Cameron University! As a student employee, you are considered a part-time employee of Cameron University. Student employment gives you a unique opportunity to gain valuable work experience while earning financial assistance for your school-related expenses. If at any time you have questions or concerns during your employment, please feel free to contact me. My goal is to make your student employment a positive and rewarding experience!

OVERVIEW

The Student Employment Orientation reviews your rights, responsibilities, and expectations as an employee of Cameron University and the State of Oklahoma. We also offer some helpful suggestions on workplace professionalism to make your student employment a successful and rewarding experience. All Cameron student employees must complete this orientation as a requirement of on-campus employment. The student employment orientation is required and must be completed prior to your first day of employment.

Please carefully review each section. You will be directed to take a short quiz once you have completed the orientation. Completion of this orientation and the following quiz is mandatory for all new Student Employees.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Cameron University is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for the entire University. In the event of an employee injury, employees should follow the proper procedures for reporting an on the job injury. Please take a moment to review your obligations as an employee if an on the job injury were to occur:

  1. Notify your supervisor, regardless of how minor the injury or illness may appear. In some emergency situations, it may be necessary to report the injury or illness to your supervisor after treatment.
  2. For non-emergency injuries seek care at one of the University’s designated first responders. The University’s designated first responder is any of the Well Fast-Urgent Care Clinics.
  3. For emergency or life threatening illnesses or injuries seek immediate care at the nearest hospital.
  4. Before an employee may return to work, they are required to provide a work release from the physician stating that they are able to return to work with no restrictions.

STUDENT EMPLOYEE EXPECTATIONS

This job is a serious obligation and your performance, attitude, and conduct should reflect this commitment. You are expected to:

  • Establish a work schedule that does not interfere with your class schedule.
  • Report to work on time. Notify your supervisor in advance of any possible delays.
  • Notify your supervisor in advance of any changes to your work schedule or other commitments that will affect work availability.
  • Take the job seriously and perform at the highest level of your ability.
  • Treat your supervisor and fellow employees with respect.
  • Dress appropriately for the job location. Always practice good personal hygiene.
  • Do not use inappropriate or offensive language in the workplace.
  • Do not conduct personal business on the job.
  • Refrain from using cell phones and personal laptops or tablets while on the job.
  • Accurately report the hours you work on your timesheet.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Give appropriate notice if you are leaving a position.

ATTENDANCE

Good attendance and punctuality are important and basic to success in your new job. If you are chronically absent or tardy you cannot fulfill the job for which you were hired.

Tips for the Workplace:

  • Call your supervisor if you are not able to report for work. Failure to report for a scheduled shift is considered job abandonment and may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.
  • Always provide at least 30 minutes notice if you are ill and not able to report for work.
  • If you call in, be sure to speak directly to your supervisor.
  • Do not let friends call in for you. A parent or spouse may call if you physically cannot call.
  • Provide at least 2 days notice for any scheduled time off (i.e. exams, projects, vacation).

AT-WILL EMPLOYMENT

At-Will employment applies to Student Employees; it is an employment relationship of indefinite duration that may be terminated by either party, at any time, without cause or for any reason except one that is unlawful.

ENROLLMENT RESTRICTIONS

As a student employee, you must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours for the fall and spring or at least 3 credit hours for summer. International students must maintain a full course of study. You are required to notify your supervisor if your schedule changes.

WORK HOUR RESTRICTIONS


Class 1st - Job 2nd


Student employees are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session. Student Employees are not allowed to work during scheduled class time. You must provide your supervisor with a new copy of your class schedule if you make a change. During intersession, a student may work up to 39 hours per week at the supervisor’s discretion as long as the student is enrolled in the upcoming semester.

DUAL EMPLOYMENT

Student employees are not allowed to hold more than one type of on-campus job. Students employees are only able to fill student employment positions. They may not work in both a student employment position and a classified hourly position. For example, if a student desires to accept an hourly position, he/she will be required to resign from student employment.

PAYROLL AND TIMESHEET COMPLETION

A very important aspect of your job responsibility will be properly completing your timesheet. It is a good practice to maintain your timesheet daily. Student Timesheets are located in Aggie Access on the Employee Tab under the Timesheet Entry/Leave Report channel. It is the responsibility of the employee to keep track of their hours worked. Timesheets must be submitted for approval by 5:00 p.m. on the last working day of the month. Failure to meet that deadline may result in delayed payment. All payments are made via direct deposit. Wages are deposited on the 12th of the following month. If the 12th falls on a weekend, wages will be deposited the Friday before.

CONFIDENTIALITY

In the course of your student employment, you may be exposed to information and records concerning fellow students and employees. Federal law and University policy protects the privacy and security of this information. As an employee of Cameron University, you are required to treat confidential information with the highest level of privacy, care, and professionalism. It is a good practice to consider all office information and communication confidential.
